YAC for IHL
What is IHL?
International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is a set of rules that aims to protect those who are not or no longer directly involved in conflict. Whether these rules are formally codified in law or not, it is important for all belligerents to follow these rules to prevent unnecessary human suffering.
How is the Red Cross involved?
The Red Cross and Red Crescent movements around the world provide humanitarian aid to those affected by warfare. They also aim to educate more people about the significance of IHL, especially through youth action campaigns like these.
The Red Cross uses the following seven principles to guide their humanitarian work:
Impartiality Help those in need without discriminating against anyone
Neutrality Do not take sides in a conflict
Independence Operate as a separate entity from governments
Humanity Relieve suffering wherever it may be
Voluntary participation Serve others because you want to and not for personal gain
Unity Each Red Cross organization is open to all
Universality Every Red Cross organization around the world is equal
